Hare Ball is a 17 inch steel sphere formed from carefully curved and joined sheet metal plates. These steel pieces are silhouettes of Nova Scotia Snowshoe Hares. Overall, it appears as a metallic globe with a complex pattern of negative and positive shapes and spaces. The exterior surfaces of the metal plates have a softly burnished patina with copper and steel highlights. The interior is matte black. The negative and positive shapes and spaces interact rapidly when viewed in changing perspective.
Approaching at first glance, the shapes and spaces of Hare Ball look random and abstract, but the rabbit profiles quickly emerge. Some people laugh when they recognize the rabbits. “Art work doesn’t need to be too serious,” says Badger. “I like to have fun with art and add a touch of whimsy if I can. I like jokes and puns, too. I used these shapes to make this sphere just so I could call it Hare Ball.” The rabbit silhouettes were inspired by illustrations Badger found in a wildlife identification book.
