Born in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, Russia, Dmitrii Volkov studied art at the Nicholas Roerich St. Petersburg Academy of Art, recieving an MFA in Design and Illustration in 1993. His interest in craft and craftsmanship increased and he began additional studies at St. Petersburg State Academy of Art and Industry, specializing in art metal and metalcrafts. After a six year program of work/study and professional/academic internships, he completed an MFA in Metalworking and Jewelry in 2000.
In business since 1995 as a designer-craftsman in metals with a studio and workshop in St. Petersburg, Dmitrii developed an international reputation as a master smith. He's won several prestigious art metal competitions and awards in Russia and Europe. His designs and projects have been widely published, and his work has been featured in exhibitions and showcases in Russia, Europe and the United States.
In 2015, Dmitrii responded to a LinkedIn opportunity announcement from Anvil Works and came to the shop for several one month visits in the following two years. A professional and creative bond developed, leading to mutual efforts to join up full time. The West Virginia School of Law Immigration Clinic pursued an EB-1a Exceptional Ability immigration visa on his behalf, and in 2018, Dmitrii, his wife and son recieved green cards for permanent residency in the U.S.
